Karim and Nawal Motawi
Karim and Nawal Motawi

This brother and sister team have been crafting tile in Ann Arbor, Michigan for over 15 years.  Karim and Nawal Motawi are known for hand crafting tile of unique character and of the highest quality.  Both Karim and Nawal are graduates of the University of Michigan.

While attending the University of Michigan School of Art,  Nawal Motawi studied ceramic arts and learned the art of fine tile making at the historic Pewabic Pottery in Detroit, Michigan.  After years of work developing her craft, Nawal founded the Motawi Tileworks.

Word of her skill and creativity quickly spread as Nawal created unique art tile for gifts, kitchens and fireplaces. Soon after the studio opened, Nawal's younger brother Karim, a creative talent in his own right, joined the studio to help satisfy the demand for Motawi tile. Through the years more Motawis have joined Nawal and Karim in the studio. To this day the Motawi Tileworks is family owned and operated.

Following the traditions of the historic Rookwood, Pewabic and Moravian studios, the Motawi family is continuing to create authentic art and crafts style tile of the highest quality.  Well known in the Ann Arbor, Michigan art scene, the Motawi's teach tile making and are active members of the Ann Arbor Art association.

Beyond the exquisite polychrome tile we carry,  the Motawi Tileworks offers an extensive selection of embossed tiles and flat field tiles for installation in fireplaces, kitchens, bathrooms and floors .  Motawi Tileworks offers a custom design service for one of a kind installations.   Motawi Tile can be found in many celebrity homes and public spaces around the country.
