500 Tiles: An Inspiring Collection of International Work (500 Series) (Paperback)
by Lark Books (Author)

From press-molded pieces to carved works showcasing spectacular surface treatments, these magnificent tiles will inspire beginners and professionals, as well as collectors and enthusiasts. Some of the larger handcrafted displays here were made to decorate public and private spaces; others use single tiles to interpret nature, tell a story, or make a bold cultural observation. As always in this acclaimed series, all the contributors are accomplished artists, renowned in the field. Mary Lynn Buss creates the ultimate kitchen backsplash: a field of mosaic-tiled long-necked irises. Peter King and his wife and working partner Xinia Marín fashion large, expressively rendered, and sculptural installations. And Melody Ellis’s low-relief earthenware tiles pack intriguing narratives into every tile.

Barcelona Tile Designs (Agile Rabbit Editions) (Hardcover)

In Barcelona, the design of such tiles reached its peak in the age of 'Modernismo', the Spanish variety of Art Nouveau, in the early 20th century. Barcelona Tile Designs features a colorful collection of carefully restored and digitized designs. Both single tiles and whole patterns and borders are shown, and the tiles on the CD make it possible to create designs in any shape and size. A great resource for design professionals and

Batchelder Tilemaker (Hardcover)
by Robert Winter (Author) "Through his writings on design and his prolific production of decorative ceramic tiles from 1910 to 1932,

"The importance of Ernest Batchelder as an Arts and Crafts tilemaker cannot be overstated. For his innovation in design, his entrepreneurial spirit, his living his life true to the principles that he espoused, he is a man to be admired by all generations." (Joseph A. Taylor, Tile Heritage Foundation)

Ernest Batchelder's ceramic tilemaking enterprise began as a modest backyard venture in rural Pasadena, California but quickly grew to national prominence. In 1908 this enterprising young man left a prestigious teaching position to start his own school and factory, with the goal of establishing a West Coast guild of craftspeople. By 1930 the Batchelder-Wilson Company had showrooms in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and San Francisco, as well as representation in virtually every major city in the United States. New York, Minneapolis, and Vancouver hosted major Batchelder architectural ceramic installations.
Batchelder remained the preeminent leader of handmade tiles in the West until the Depression forced the closure of his operations in 1932. His clients ranged from restaurants to churches to high rise office buildings, although perhaps the most striking installations remain the many fireplaces gracing modest American bungalows throughout the country.

California Tile: The Golden Era 1910-1940: Hispano-Moresque to Woolenius (Hardcover)
by California Heritage Museum (Author), Steven Soukup (Designer), Michael Trotter (Designer), Joseph A. Taylor (Editor)

Without a doubt, this has got to be one of the best, if not the best book on Arts and Crafts Tile I've seen, and I've got them all. Although dealing with California tile makers only, there's enough material here to fill two books - and in fact, that's what they did! I didn't realize that this is really Vol. I of II, the other covers the rest of the H's down to the Z's. And that's my only gripe - $82 if one buys both, AND now I have to wait 4-5 weeks for the 2nd part. But as a reference to companies and what they made, this book is outstanding. Can hardly wait - Note, the cost of this book has gone up from $41 to the present $59.59 - So, I'd suggest buying the second vol now, before that goes up also. Note II there are two DIFFERENT Books the first covers Tiles from A to half way through the H's, the Second volume covers the rest of the H's down to the Z's.
American Art Tile (Hardcover)
by Norman Karlson (Author)
For collectors and aficionados of American art tile, this thoroughgoing, historically detailed book of more than 2,000 tiles from 149 potteries, studios, and factories will prove indispensable. And for casual readers who happen on its amazing array of delectable color photographs, it will be a seductive invitation to join the club. Author Norman Karlson was a photographer who shot some hand-painted Florentine tiles for a Ladies' Home Journal article in 1962. After 500 readers asked where to find them, Karlson started a European tile store in the basement of his home, branching into American art tiles in the 1980s. Here he has written brief, fascinating histories of each manufacturer, starting in New England and ending in California, with many down-to-earth details. Discussing Mississippi's Newcomb pottery, at the Southern women's college, Karlson mentions George Ohr, whose turn-of-the-century pots are now highly prized. "It is assumed that Newcomb asked Ohr to leave because his bawdy character was unsuited for the refined young ladies," Karlson notes dryly, next to photos of ceramic brothel tokens with ribald pictograms that Ohr sold as souvenirs at his own studio. Karlson provides pictures of scores of tile-clad surfaces, from cozy Arts and Crafts mantelpieces to the New York subway system. He also includes photos of potteries' identifying marks, biographical sketches of six leaders of the American art-tile movement, a glossary, and a detailed bibliography. --Margaret Moorman
Art Nouveau Tiles (Hardcover)
by Hans van Lemmen (Author), Bart Verbrugge (Author)
At the turn of the century, Art Nouveau-- characterized by richly ornamental, curvilinear design-- held sway as the international style in art, architecture, and decorative arts, including the production of tiles. This is the first book to examine Art Nouveau tiles from all over Europe as well as the United States, and an essential volume for the collector and interior designer, featuring 200 stunning color photographs of these ceramic treasures.

The authors explore various techniques and processes used in the creation of Art Nouveau tiles, from hand-painting and mosaic work to terracotta and faience, as well as the history of tile production and the architectural application of tiles in Europe, Russia, and America from the mid-nineteenth century to the present day. The book traces the roots of Art Nouveau to the British Arts and Crafts movement, which produced tile work by such artists as William Morris, William De Morgan, and Christopher Dresser. Following this, the wide variety of Art Nouveau tiles across northern and Central Europe is surveyed in detail: in Belgium, France, Germany, Holland, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Hungary. Separate chapters are also devoted to Spain and Portugal, and the unique tradition of American tile-making-- highlighting the work of important designers, artists, architects, and manufacturers. To conclude their survey, the authors look at how elements of Art Nouveau were absorbed into Art Deco after World War I, and the revival of Art Nouveau styles of tile-making in the 1980s and 1990s. A special section for collectors discusses the significance of tile motifs, and offers information about marks on tile backs and advice on acquisition, display, restoration, and repair.
