Stuart Compton My work follows in the footsteps of the American art potteries of that time: Grueby, Rhead, Dedham, Batchelder and others. I created a master tile in clay, then cast it in plaster. From that mold I hand press each tile, hand glaze and fire the tiles. The clocks and bookends are each hand assembled from slabs of clay and tiles, not slip cast.

My mission statement follows the lines of the old Arts and Crafts movement, where production was not the key, but creativity and handmade quality were. Much like the potteries of the past, the most desirable and collectible pieces were made in small studios such as Grueby and Overbeck. My goal is to recreate that small studio creativity and connectedness by being involved in the creation of each piece of quality handmade art that leaves my studio.

Seiz Pottery
401 W. Chestnut Street
Chatham, IL 62629

After 25 years of teaching and producing pottery I decided to start my "Collector Series" in the year 2005. This work is influenced by my study of the Art Pottery of the Arts and Crafts movement and the "Prairie School" style. The "Prairie School" style is typically defined as geometric, organic, or architectural.

All of the pieces in this series are hand thrown, hand glazed, stamped and numbered. Only 75 unique pieces were produced in the 2005 and 2006 series. As I begin the 2007 series, my goal is to continue to produce unique and experimental pieces true to the tradition of the Arts and Crafts movement. By creating one-of-a-kind pieces, I am able to emphasize quality over quantity. This keeps it interesting for myself and the collectors of my pottery.
